Beginner-Backcountry ski lessons-  Tracked and untracked snow

Lessons geared toward those comfortable on groomed but want to learn backcountry skiing.  Limited to 25 members.

Topics include the same topics as the Beginner-Beginner clinic (skiing on the flat, easy uphill, moderate downhill, stopping, getting back up, and a discussion on gear) but on steeper terrain, plus navigation, equipment, preparation, and ermergencies.

What to Bring:

Appropriate ski equipment: 58-70 mm width skis. Wider skis (65 mm or more) will be easier for downhill.

Clothing to match all conditions.  Proper winter clothing for insulation and protection from wind, rain, and snow. Dress in layers. No cotton!  We will be working on skills so that means some standing around.  Chemical hand warmers are not a bad idea.

Water, snack/lunch.  Snacks and lunch are often eaten outside.  Bring food that can be easily eaten quickly in case it is cold.

Consider the Ten Essentials.

Number of students: 25

Meeting time/place: The Grove at Northwest Crossing by 9:30 (earlier for coffee and chit-chat), to leave no later than 9:40.  We will sign waivers, organize, car pool, and drive to Swampy Lake Sno-Park. (Drivers will need sno-park permits.) Those taking a ride please help with gas.

The goal is to be at Swampy by 10:00 to 10:15.  The lessons will last 2-2 1/2 hours.

For Questions: Jerry Sebestyen
