Intro to Backcountry Skiing Lecture

This lecture was recorded and can be viewed here.

Are you interested in progressing from groomed Nordic trails into backcountry skiing? Or are you an experienced backcountry skier already? This class will offer tips and perspectives to expand your horizons.

Instructors Mark Waters and Woody Keen, with a combined century of experience skiing the back of beyond, will cover topics to help you make the transition. Our instructors will be covering the following areas and more:

  • terrain and snow conditions encountered in the backcountry,
  • recommended ski gear for various levels of conditions and terrain differences,
  • techniques for most efficient application to touring and turning,
  • navigation and
  • safety.

Mark was a professional Nordic and alpine instructor and guide who has taught in Vermont, Colorado and Oregon. In addition he worked for many years in the ski industry in sales and design of backcountry ski gear.

Woody had a ski touring school on the east coast for many years and is an avid and accomplished telemark skier and instructor.

This workshop will give an informational overview as to what you can expect when moving from the controlled environment of a groomed ski area to the backcountry. Our instructors will focus on ways to make your touring safer and more efficient, including tips for assessing increasing risk levels.

If you are considering taking the Beginner Nordic Tour Clinic or Intermediate Nordic Tour Clinic , this is a prerequisite for those outings. This keeps us from standing around in the cold talking about this stuff, and we can go out and practice skills instead.  We plan on recording this presentation, but we strongly recommend attending in person.

The Central Oregon Nordic Club, PO Box 744, Bend, OR 97709, is chapter of the Oregon Nordic Club, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
