Intermediate Ski: Nordeen Shelter Loop – 2/2/2025

Nordeen Trail Loop. This route includes some groomed trail (Tangent uphill) and through flagged, flat trail to and from the Nordeen Shelter.

Trail Highlights: The terrain is mostly flat except for some uphill travel on groomed Tangent Loop trail. We’ll stop at the Nordeen Shelter for about 15-20 minutes for snacks and warm up. The forecast is for snow beginning Friday through early next week. So we’ll have fresh snow and possibly be breaking trail. The highs are forecasted upper 20s so it will be a fun, wintery day of ski touring.

Level of Difficulty and Distance/Time expected:

This is an intermediate level trip as the conditions are variable and the distance is approximately 5 miles round trip.

When: Sunday, February 2, 2025

Where: Ski the Nordeen Trail loop from Swampy Sno-Park. TH is Swampy Lakes; about a 30-minute drive from The Grove.

Meeting place/time: We will meet at The Grove at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday 2/2/25 and leave promptly at 9:00 a.m. Please arrive no later than 8:45 to sign waivers, organize carpools, and socialize.

 What to bring:

  • Ten Essentials. Including tools & straps for ski/boot repairs.
  • Proper winter clothing for insulation and protection from wind and rain. Dress in layers. No cotton!
  •  Glide wax, extra phone battery.
  • Water, snack/lunch. Snacks and lunch are often eaten outside. Bring food that can be easily eaten quickly in case it is cold.
  • No dogs allowed.

Ski Equipment: In general, skis should have a no-wax pattern for grip and metal edges for control on ice or hard pack conditions. Minimum width at the tip of the ski should be greater than 62mm.  Wider skis will provide better stability in more difficult conditions

Boots should be over the ankle for support and control, and must be compatible with the bindings on the skis.  Poles should have large baskets so they don't sink in soft snow.  Adjustable poles are good for varying terrain and conditions.

Skis, boots, and poles designed exclusively for skiing on machine groomed tracks are not allowed on this tour.
